Aslan is one of about four million Syrians who have fled from their country to find refuge. While he left everything behind, he refused to make the challenging trek without his beloved dog Rose despite being told he couldn’t bring him along.
The U.N. Refugee Agency shared a video of the pair on its Facebook page and it amassed more than 2 million views in just a couple of days.
“[W]e’ve seen many like him carrying their animals with them on the long journey from Syria, across the Mediterranean Sea and through Europe,” the video’s caption reads. “When forced to flee home because of war, many people would never dream of leaving their pets behind.”
The 17-year-old, who traveled from Syria’s capital, Damascus, to the Greek island Lesbos, said the long trip required over 300 miles on foot. Yet, he ensured Rose was fed and hydrated proving his unwavering love for his dog, much like the man who went through great lengths to give hisRottweiler the best final days.
The video has struck a chord with people all over the world and many are admiring Aslan for his bravery.
“For those fleeing the war in Syria that love their animals, who won’t leave them to an unsure future, these are the people who wear their hearts on their sleeves and are not afraid to show their compassion. We need more people like this lad,” one Facebook user said.
But, when asked why he brought the dog along, the teen simply said something most dog owners will relate to: “I love this dog. I need him.”
